Summary: Heliopolis, a so-called neutral space colony was holding a top-secret weapons research facility, producing Gundams for the Earth Alliance. ZAFT, which is composed of Coordinators (genetically modified/upgraded humans), attacks Heliopolis, stealing 4 out of the Alliance's 5 Gundams. In the battlefield, civilian Kira Yamato stumbles upon the Strike, the last remaining Gundam of the alliance, and is forced to pilot it. In the midst of battle he encounters his best friend, Athrun Zala, as one of the hijackers of the 5 Gundams, who sides with ZAFT. Being a Coordinator, he is the only one who can pilot the Gundam. But Kira is not with ZAFT, even though they're his own kind, nor the Alliance. Since the Alliance is the only place he could turn to at the time, he sides with them. He pilots the Gundam to protect his friends, and to fight his best friend, which pains both of them. It's a war between individual beliefs.

Good Anime of its era

I'm usually not one to write a 5 by 5 excellent rating, but here I am. Usually I have to stray away from a lot of the teenager/older children animes because they usually contain too many fillers or just lack a plot. The plot of this anime is actually a lot more mature than its rating. It brings up many upper level psychological themes such as defining right from wrong or friend from foe. It also questions how one defines humanity, whether or not genetic manipulation is morally justified and how natures design either allows for or rejects the presence and coexistence of those who are genetically altered.
Character design could have been a bit better, but overall I would have to rate it a 5/5. Many of the moments where we run into a character having an emotional breakdown are absolutely correct and applied correctly, but there are a lot of times as well *Cough Cough* Kira and Kogali *Cough Cough* where the emotional breakdowns are unnecessary. I also thought that the subtle and not so subtle inter-character relationships added a good deal of very real drama into this series.
The audio for this was outstanding. 5/5 any day. I found that it complemented the mood of the show and added to the drama and action. Well played.
Overall a very good anime. Sure it has its moments where it seems overly emotional, but a very large amount of those times are very realistic given the setting.
