This anime is, in my opinion, the best I have seen of its genre (the only exception being Code Geass). I have a bit a of a problem with the animation, it seems far too stilted and as such limits the anime's potential for more graphic effect but other than that I find no problem with the anime as a whole. The story is your typical boy meets power and this through a television. What I loved about this anime (I have yet to play the game so excuse me for this) is the fact that it inadvertently plays around with "a world within a television" sort of theme. It makes certain that we as viewers get to understand that the sphere between the "real" world and the television world is completely separate and different on a level far greater than mere adverts or TV shows. The shadows that control and live within that world is a nice touch, even more convincing is the medieval language the Persona employs "I art thou and thou art I", it gives the anime a level of mysticism which is found lacking in other anime of this particular genre. As such this anime shows such potential, acting as a metaphorics of media control within our everyday lives (note the little girl who is rather addicted to the Junes advert "Look, touch and feel") and the shadows themselves seem to act as a sort of dark side within the television whereas the Persona acts as an enlightenment (once again this is where Code Geass and Persona 4 reach a commonality which is quite rare). I have never been a fan of game-cum-anime but this anime is starting to make me change my opinion since it does not involve any of that frivolity most common to really bad remakes of games. A nice piece of work if you are into machinery and science fiction and a definite must watch - the characterisation is absolutely fabulous and the storyline phenomenal. You be all the happier for watching an anime such as this.
