Kimihiro Watanuki is a young boy with a cursed gift. He has the ability to see evil spirits, and somehow they seem attracted to himself. One day he meets a misterious woman who names herself Yuuko. She claims to have the means to end his torment, but she never works for free, and she wouldn't help him until he works for her enough to pay for her services. Thus he starts to work in her shop and discovers that in that place, nothing is what it seems. |

I think it's important to know that both the stories of XXXHolic and Tsubasa Chronicles are connected. I also think that from my experience, it's good to watch Tsubasa first.
Saying that, if you take the show for what it is, it is fantastic. Yuuko is one of the most mysterious, irrational and brilliant female characters of all time and whilst Watanuki is a energetic, kindhearted idiot - he is also one of my favourite, kindest anime guys I have ever seen.
There is no set story to XXXHolic. They are a series of small arcs dealing with different cases brought to Yuuko's shop. But it's wonderful seeing how Watanuki develops as a character and how Yuuko brings him and other characters together.
It's worth watching for Yuuko and Watanuki and Watanuki and Doumeki dynamics alone.
Plus the artwork and music are lovely.

If you can imagine Yuri on Ice! meets Holmes of Kyoto, then this is it. Slow paced but gripping. Boy-Love but not distasteful...
