Summary:
In the future, personal computers have developed into "Persocons", mobile computers that look like human beings. Hideki Motosuwa, a prep school student, desperately wants to buy a Persocon but cannot afford to. One day he finds a Persocon that has been thrown away and decides to keep it. When he turns on the Persocon, all she can say is "Chii" so he decides to name her that. After a while it starts to become apparent that Chii is more than an average Persocon. Having much better performance, it seems that Chii might be a "Chobit", a type of advanced Persocon rumored to have independent thought.
Chobits has been recommended to me several times by my anime (dare I say otaku?) friends and I've finally gotten around to viewing it. I found the premise very interesting and being a sucker for romance, it really hit the spot!
Chobits explores aspects of romance that not everyone will agree with and requires you to keep an open mind at times... so although on a personal level I didn't always agree with the characters actions I did thoroughly enjoy the anime as a whole.
Technically the anime is quite well done and seemed to improve as the series progressed. Artwork was clean and somewhat simplistic with nicely-drawn, slightly more detailed backgrounds. I enjoyed the OP and ED pieces especially after realizing it was the main japanese VA for Chi singing them all. And speaking of VA, I found myself gravitating toward the English dub and I'll tell you why - it has my favourite English VA of all time, Bridget Hoffman, as the voice of Chitose Hibiya the apartment manager!
Chobits is a sweet tale of a romance where in the end the characters must decide on whether it's better to suffer the pains of being together or being apart... enjoy!
