There's something special about early 2000's anime, and Kokoro Toshokan is a beautiful example of this.
My attention is hard to keep, and yet somehow this show's atmosphere pulled me in and kept me wanting to stay. Something about this show's nature is comforting. The music, art, presentation, story, dialogue and the characters all make what should be the most boring setting possible, an abandoned library, nothing short of captivating.
As well, it all surrounds a mystery. Why would someone build a library on a mountain no one is near? Well, thank God they did. Because we get to visit it and see Kokoro's story unfold in hand-painted colors. Furthermore, this question is answered by the end of the story.
It's short, very sweet & heartwarming, and while it is a slice of life story, I would not say it is careless with your time. It's a story that feels refreshing to exist in and does not overstay its welcome. It tells a coherent tale and is wholesome all the way through. It makes a few promises and keeps them to the end. And it even has a few absurd moments and feats.
Even the wording it goes for is moving and poetic, as early as the intro:
"人里離れた山の奥にある小さな図書館
Away from civilization and deep in the mountains, exists a small library.
そこには穏やかで優しい女の子がいて
In there, exists a kind and reserved girl
しっかり者な女の子がいて
A responsible girl
図書館と同じ名前な女の子がいるのです
And a girl with the same name as the library."
(Of course, it flows better in JP.)
I still listen to the opening song and have it saved in my playlists to this day. And as the intro suggests, the characters uniquely bring life to the anime.
I didn't realize how much I loved this show until I began putting it into words for this review. I am hesitating from rating the story as Excellent simply because I don't want to oversell it and realistically, there are deeper stories. But this one is solidly good imo.
I don't remember exactly how I found it, but most likely it's because I thought the cover art was pretty.
This is the kind of show I am looking for when I search for anime recommendations. This is an underrated show that I would recommend to almost anyone, and I very much do not want to see it forgotten.
It is a story with so much love put into it.
One downside is, it is very hard to find online in good quality, so I took the opportunity to upload it in the best quality I could find, to hopefully preserve it for anyone interested. Soft subs, and fairly good for how hard it is to find.
As a final note, I watched this in Japanese without subtitles. I am not great at Japanese yet, and many things go over my head. That said, even while struggling to understand the language, I still was able to enjoy it even during the parts that I couldn't explicitly understand. I cannot do this if a show is just boring or only offers dialogue.
Something about this show offers more than that. So, consider resting at this bonfire.
